A chip to enable 100-gigabit single-wavelength client-side optical modules has been unveiled by MultiPhy. The 100-gigabit 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) circuit will also be a key building block for 400 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces that use four wavelengths.
MultiPhy Ltd. used ECOC 2017 in Gothenburg, Sweden, this week to launch the MPF3101, a PAM4 DSP designed to support transmission of 100 Gbps over a single wavelength. The company showed the device at the booth of fellow communications semiconductor developer Semtech, which will supply complementary chips.

MultiPhy is developing chips to support serial 100-gigabit-per-second transmission using 25-gigabit optical components. The design will enable short reach links within the data centre and up to 80km point-to-point links for data centre interconnect. “It is not the same chip [for the two applications] but the same technology core,” says Avi Shabtai, the CEO of MultiPhy. The funding will be used to bring products to market as well as expand the company’s marketing arm.
The new capital, equivalent to a C funding round, will give the company additional resources and tools to accelerate development of its next-generation FlexPhy IC and drive the adoption of its technology through strategic partnerships. The funding will also allow MultiPhy to expand its business operations to better support customers and strengthen the company’s leadership in the market.
DSP-based communications semiconductor company MultiPhy Inc. says it has closed $17 million in its third round of funding. The money comes from existing and new investors, which include venture capitalists and what the company termed a strategic corporate leaders. MultiPhy did not disclose the identities of the investors, but Semtech Corp. (NASDAQ: SMTC) separately revealed it is now one of the largest stakeholders in the company.

The decision follows months of debate regarding whether serial 100G technology was sufficiently mature to be included in the 400 Gigabit Ethernet specification. Task Force members voted to adopt a 4×100-Gbps PMD based on PAM-4 modulation for single-mode fiber applications at reaches of 500 m.
